Water covers 3/4 of the earth’s surface and all living organisms need water to grow and survive which is why the water cycle is important. learning about the water cycle should be fun. I compiled a list of 10 water cycle activities that will definitely make the kids amazed. Also, don’t forget to check out my Freebie and the complete Water Cycle Pack.
The Complete Water Cycle Pack (Includes everything you need to teach the unit)
Activities / Experiments
You can check out the detailed instructions through each link and then come back for more ideas!
1. How clouds make rain experiment – Mrs. Jones’ Creation Station
This simple science experiment teaches children how clouds make rain. Using water, shaving cream, and food coloring, the activity demonstrates how water vapor accumulates, condenses, and eventually falls as precipitation. It’s an engaging hands-on experiment that brings on discussions about clouds and the water cycle while being easy to set up and conduct. You can view more info HERE.
2. Use Lego to build the water cycle – you will need legos and a lego baseplate for this fun activity – KC Edventures
This activity involves building a 3D water cycle model using LEGO bricks. Children create representations of precipitation, evaporation, and condensation while learning how water moves through its cycle. It’s a hands-on project that combines science with creativity, making complex concepts easier to understand through visual and tactile learning. You can view more Info HERE.
3. Discovery bottle activity – Little Bins for Little Hands
The water cycle in a bottle experiment demonstrates evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection within a closed system. Heat causes water to evaporate, forming vapor. When the vapor cools, it condenses into droplets on the bottle’s surface. As these droplets grow, they fall back as precipitation, collecting at the bottom and restarting the cycle. This hands-on activity helps kids visualize how water changes states and moves through the water cycle stages. You can view more Info HERE.
4. Make a Terrarium – OPC
The “Water Cycle Terrarium” activity involves creating a self-sustaining ecosystem in a closed glass container. Students can observe the water cycle stages—evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection—inside the terrarium. Condensation forms on the glass, simulating rain, which waters the plants, completing the cycle. This hands-on project beautifully demonstrates how water cycles through nature in a miniature environment. You can view more Info HERE.
5. Salt on a stick experiment – you will need non hardening modeling clay for this experiment – Kids Earth Science
6. Simple evaporation experiment – Capri Plus 3
7. Water Cycle in a bag – Rookie Parenting Science
8. Cloud in a jar – Playdough to Plato
9. Shaving cream rain clouds – One Little Project
10. Design a flip book animation based on the water cycle (This is one of my favorites!) – Meet Penny
if you have your own classroom you might also want to get a water cycle model activity set that you can use in centers. It is so much fun! I would recommend this model set.
