As a self-published author, you’ve spent so much time and poured your heart into writing your book. You’ve worked on editing, designing the cover, and crafting a description you’re proud of. But despite all your hard work, the sales just aren’t coming in.

You’re not alone—many authors face this struggle. The truth is, writing the book is only half the battle. The other half? Making sure your book is visible to readers on Amazon. And a key part of that visibility comes down to keywords.

In this post, we’ll explore the most common keyword mistakes authors make and how fixing them can transform your book’s sales.

Mistake #1: Using Keywords That Are Too Broad

Did you know that most aspiring authors dive headfirst into publishing on Amazon KDP, only to feel overwhelmed by low sales and missed opportunities? They hit the “publish” button, eagerly wait for their first sale, and are met with… crickets.

But what if there was a way to give yourself a massive head start, eliminate the guesswork, and skyrocket your book’s visibility on Amazon?

It all comes down to one thing: understanding how to get your book in front of the right audience. And for that, you need a powerful tool that will make your keyword research, category selection, and competition analysis effortless. Enter Publisher Rocket—a must-have tool for any KDP author.

Why Publisher Rocket is a Game-Changer

Amazon is the world’s largest online bookstore, but it’s also a crowded marketplace. If your book doesn’t appear in the right searches, even the best-written masterpiece will struggle to get noticed. This is where Publisher Rocket shines.

Here’s how it can transform your KDP journey:

1. Find Keywords That Readers Are Actually Searching For

Instead of guessing what potential readers type into the Amazon search bar, Publisher Rocket gives you real data. You’ll discover high-traffic keywords with low competition, helping your book rank higher in search results and making it easier for readers to find you.

I screenshotted the picture below from Publisher Rocket to show you an example. I searched the keyword – “Bug book for kids” and after clicking enter, it gave me this important data. Not only will it show other keywords you might have not thought about to include, but it also shows you the estimated Amazon searches a month that particular keyword has and the competitive score. In the ‘Competitive Score’ column, you’ll find how difficult it is to rank for that keyword. A score below 40 is generally a good target, especially if you’re just starting out.

For instance, ‘bug book for kids’ has a decent search volume, but the competitive score is 93—too high to pursue. However, the keyword right below it, ‘bug book for kids age 5,’ is a great option! It gets 2,293 monthly searches and has a competitive score of 40. Remember, even though this keyword looks promising, if your book isn’t geared toward 5-year-olds, it wouldn’t be a good fit. Luckily, there’s another excellent option right below that: ‘bug books for kids ages 8-12,’ which might suit your book better if it targets an older age group.

2. Choose the Best Categories

Choosing the right categories can make or break your book’s visibility on Amazon. With thousands of categories available, how do you know which ones will help your book stand out? That’s where Publisher Rocket comes in.

This powerful tool doesn’t just show you the obvious categories— It also reveals valuable data, like how many books you’ll need to sell daily to rank as a bestseller in each category.

3. Spy on Competitors

Learn what’s working for other successful authors in your niche. Publisher Rocket provides insights into their keywords, pricing strategies, and book details, so you can position your book for maximum success. This is a GAME-CHANGER.

For example, the screenshot below shows data behind the book Ocean Animals for Kids. It shows keywords buyers typed into the search bar to find and buy this book. You would go through all the keywords listed, and pick the ones with highest search volume and lowest competition.

4. Save Time and Boost Profits

Manual research can take hours—if not days—and still leave you guessing. With Publisher Rocket, you’ll gain accurate insights in minutes, freeing up your time to focus on writing and marketing your book.

Who Is Publisher Rocket For?

Whether you’re a first-time author or a seasoned pro, Publisher Rocket is the ultimate tool for anyone serious about selling books on Amazon. If you’re publishing children’s books, novels, workbooks, or non-fiction, this software will guide you toward creating a listing that SELLS.
